Surviving Digital Disruption | IT

A good look at today in information technology.  With changes and new requirements, what will survive and grow, what will become obsolete and die?

Excerpt:  As a result, “20 to 40 percent of businesses at this conference won’t be here in five to 10 years,” said Forrester Research VP and Principal Analyst Bobby Cameron. “The ones that disappear are the ones not able to stabilize back office activities that don’t differentiate them competitively.”

As technology practices struggle to align with changing competitive business practices, they must also incorporate the arrival of big data, analytics, social, mobile and cloud technologies in their processes and architecture.

Whether through planning or as a result of the evolution, captive enterprise IT skills are migrating from blue collar to white collar.

Mobile-Only Social Networks To Reach 1B Users By 2014, 800M Users Of Foursquare + Other Location Services This Year

Check out the predictions and some stats from Gartner and TechCrunch in this TechCrunch article.   Good read for all small business.

Excerpt:  Gartner names three things that are still niche and growing: bar code marketing, mobile coupons and augmented reality. All three share some common features: a lack of consumer awareness, slow adoption and often-poor user experience. (These are my opinions, not Gartner’s.) Bar codes, Gartner believes, could become “mainstream” within 2-5 years. Mobile coupon adoption has been “slow” and augmented reality reached its hype cycle two years ago (when it was, as it is now, still niche). Whether efforts by Apple with its Passbook service, or Facebook pushing further into coupons, or Google and its ambitions to do ever more integrating services like Goggles and Wallet, helps turn these challenges around remains to be seen.

Your Company Needs A Mobile Strategy Yesterday–And These Numbers Prove It

More advice on your mobile campaign — or if you don’t yet have a mobile campaign, this is a serious heads up.

Excerpt:  …….  seen how powerful mobile marketing has been for my clients and others. Here are a few examples:

A mobile-based loyalty program for Maurices, a chain of women’s clothing stores, was directly responsible for jump-starting $1 million in sales in only four months.

A text message list helped Pacha, a New York City nightclub, realize $12,400 in additional income.

A Foursquare check-in campaign boosted short-term revenues at Angelo & Maxie’s, a Manhattan restaurant, by $18,000.

These are only three examples of many success stories I’ve witnessed–and yet, the really shocking statistic when it comes to mobile marketing is how few big brands are doing it. According to a report from eMarketer, mobile advertising accounted for less than 1% of worldwide ad spending in 2011.

Turning the Retail ‘Showrooming Effect’ into a Value-add – Knowledge@Australian School of Business

For all commerce small businesses everywhere, this is a good read.  How do you now deal and profit from the growing “showrooming”?   As a consumer, I think the ability to shop for the best at the best price is fantastic, of course.  However, if I were to look at this issue from the retailer’s side of the fence, it can be a large cost to provide products that are “viewed” there but bought elsewhere.

Excerpt:  Showrooming – the consumer practice of checking out a product in one store and buying it elsewhere at a better price – has always been a challenge in retail. But with the advent of smartphones and the expansion of online retailers like Amazon.com, showrooming has gone from being a headache for bricks and mortar retailers to a full-blown migraine. Mobile phones allow consumers to “make a purchase anywhere – and that takes out the middle step of going home and ordering online,” says Wharton marketing professor David Bell. “As technology facilitates it, [showrooming] will only become more prevalent.”

Preparing For Mobile, It’s About More Than MDM

Good article   —   and again, it is a wealth of information as we form best practices in our new to learn areas  —  in this instance, mobile.

Excerpt:  …….  because they’ve not yet figured out the proper way to manage mobility. Many focus on the device, and as a side-effect keep their users toting the equivalent of graphing calculators, others feel there are not yet market-ready tools to mitigate the risk from devices, their apps and the many different user types inside their organizations.

It’s Time For A Comprehensive Approach, The Mobile Control Plane

What’s lacking isn’t the technology to manage mobile users and their devices, it’s an understanding of how it should be applied. Over the past two years, as we’ve seen mobile penetration double in the US mobile phone owning population, the market for mobility management solutions has been awash in promises of cure-alls.
