A Table of Design Methodologies: Instructional, Thinking, Agile, System, or X Problems?

The tools to help you with your daily challenges  —   for all leadership and management.

Excerpt:  The table below shows five popular design methodologies (Instructional System Design, Design Thinking, Agile Design, System Thinking, and X Problem). It includes definitions, visual models, primary focus and goals, values, main steps, and further readings. I don’t claim these are the absolute parts that make up each design approach as the definitions, goals, primary focuses, and steps may vary greatly from source to source. However, the tables notes the key points that seem to separate them from each other.

Going from left to right, the models generally are designed for solving semi-structured problems to increasingly ill-defined problems, however, the type of problem and the skills of the designer will generally depict which model might work best for a particular situation. In addition, choosing a primary methodology does not mean you cannot borrow or change processes with another model as you are in control of the design, rather than the methodology being in control—design is both art and science.

Excerpt:  Outside-in architecture connects partners, suppliers and other external parties to a company’s ecosystem. While this design is growing in popularity, does the ability to share information with third parties justify the cost of replacing your current centralized architecture?

Recently, increased competition has led some companies to embrace an emerging IT architecture model that supports information sharing among internal and external parties. Advocates of this “outside-in architecture” approach argue that it will soon become an essential element of business results. Yet this notion meets with resistance from companies that have invested heavily over the years in creating and maintaining a traditional, centralized IT architecture. Their reaction is understandable and it raises the question of whether companies should divert resources toward a new architectural model that has yet to mature and demonstrate its longer-term value to the enterprise.

How We Finally Made Agile Development Work – HBR

Excerpt:  Many software products benefit from a continuous improvement model, and for the teams working on them, increased agility is inevitable. Yet, despite dozens of books on the subject, thousands of eager coaches, and a multitude of software vendors hawking products to make agile development “easier”, many companies struggle to get to a point of true agility #i.e., being agile instead of “doing agile”#.

There are many causes for failed adoption of agile development, but the one that seems to be least often addressed is how people who are comfortable in a waterfall world adapt to this new way of working. For those in some roles — software engineers, for example — the core activity doesn’t change: they continue to write the code. For others, the path is not so clear.

Excerpt:  John Heron’s framework provides a model for analyzing how you deliver help. His model identifies six primary categories or styles of helping intervention. Based on studies in counseling, his categories became widely used to study and train health and education professionals.

The Leadership Pipeline Model – Leadership Training

Here is another great leadership training and self training tool from MindTools  —  this model will help you to also internally structure your teams and culture.

Excerpt:  Ram Charan, Stephen Drotter, and James Noel developed the Leadership Pipeline Model and published it in their book, “The Leadership Pipeline.” The model highlights six progressions that managers can go through as they develop their careers.

These progressions are from:
Managing self to managing others.
Managing others to managing managers.
Managing managers to functional manager.
Functional manager to business manager.
Business manager to group manager.
Group manager to enterprise manager.

While organizations can use these progressions to help develop their people, individuals can also use them to grow personally, increasing their knowledge and skills so that they’re ready for their next promotion.

Small business great read.  The push and choices today can be overwhelming, especially for the small business — how-to make decisions of just enough and the right criteria and tools.

Excerpt:  In the last few decades, statisticians and computer scientists have produced a dazzling arsenal of extremely powerful tools to help managers translate data into business decisions.

Having access to a wide array of versatile solutions is not ordinarily considered a problem in the world of business. But the rise of “big data” has also brought along with it the explosion of mathematical models made possible by today’s low-cost computing and storage platforms. Ironically, this poses a number of substantial challenges to managers trying to making sense of ever-growing quantities of information.

For example, says, Wharton PhD student Eric Schwartz, managers may be tempted to, as he put it, “flex their data-science muscles” and use a statistical model that is simply too complicated for the task at hand. The result, he notes, might well be that the model produces bad advice.

Excerpt:  Investors, it would seem, are giving a collective thumbs’ down to social networks. Yet investors across the board also tend to move in tandem, often throwing away the proverbial baby with the bath water. For example, a single piece of bad news about a company can tank shares of competitors in the same industry — a malady that has afflicted social networks as well. While investors might lump Facebook, Zynga, Groupon and their ilk together, these companies are not replicas of each other. All offer an element of social networking, but only Facebook is a pure social network and, with its nearly one billion users, is a unique entity unto itself. As such, experts suggest caution when making generalizations regarding the plight of social networks based on Facebook alone.

The Labor Market for Directors, Reputational Concerns, and Externalities — The Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance

Excerpt:  Being a director on the board of a public company is a privilege that often brings generous monetary compensation, prestige, publicity, power, and access to valuable networks. In order to retain old board seats and gain new ones, directors need to develop a reputation and prove they are a good match for other companies. However, it is not clear what reputation is “relevant” in this context. If corporate governance is strong and boards of other companies protect the interests of their shareholders, then building a reputation for being shareholder-friendly can help in obtaining more directorships. On the other hand, if corporate governance is weak and boards of other companies are captured by their managers who want to maintain power, then having a reputation for being management-friendly might be more useful. The goal of this paper is to understand how the labor market for directors and these conflicting reputational concerns affect directors’ behavior and the quality of corporate governance.

To study this question, we develop a model with three key ingredients.
